SHIFT

Move. Adjust. Stir.

Just don’t stay in the same spot one moment longer.
If you believed that the world was going to end today, ushering in aliens from another planet into the earth, you surely are as disappointed as I am. I was really looking out for a glimpse of outer space. And like a psychopath said, I was looking forward to catching my alien pet too! lol.
Hey, wake up! The world won’t end just like that! Before you realize it, it will be 2013. You have a few days to do a few things that can make the New Year count for maximum good. I’m not talking about New Year resolutions, neither am I referring to New Year goals. This is my word to you: SHIFT!
Shift in these four directions:
1.       Shift from where you are. Don’t let the New Year catch you in the spot you currently occupy. Eleven days are enough to make some of progress. I know that the traditional practice by most people is to give up on the year once we are a few days to Christmas, but the truth remains that the year ends at 11:59:59 on December 31! Before you throw in the towel, let that moment arrive first. Give a few more shots; take a couple of extra attempts; try again. Whatever you do, ensure that you make progress – however little it may seem.
2.      Shift from what you’ve been doing. Doing the same thing guarantees the same results. Take a different approach. Adopt a practice you’ve hitherto neglected. Try something new. Make a shift in your habits; start forming new ones. You should know that habits can be formed and unformed. Stop what you have been doing that has brought you to where you are right now.
3.       Shift from how you have been thinking. Your thinking has attracted all that you see in your life today. If your experience will change in the coming year, then you must shift in your mind. Re-program your mind to conform to your dreams. Change your school of thought about your state of health, financial life and even your spirit.
4.      Shift from what you have been learning. You can never be more intelligent than the quality of your information sources. If your information sources are healthy, then you need to increase the quantity of what you learn. When you increase the quantity of what you learn, you need to be consistent in the art of learning. Who you learn from controls the outcome of your future. Take precaution in choosing what you read, who you listen to, and what you watch. Don’t forget that the power of the remote control is in the red button.

SHIFT...from where you are, from what you've been doing, from how you have been thinking...to how you ought to be.

DON'T HIRE COMPUTERS!

This is especially to CEOs but if you are an employee or an aspiring CEO reading this, you are buying yourself an advantage.

I have observed and studied the workplace for some time now and I have observed that most of the people in organizations are not any better than a computer. Before you smile about that statement, give me some paragraphs to tell you what a computer truly is.

Researchers have proved that the capacity of the human brain is the number one plus eight long pages of zeros! If your mental capacity is this infinite, why are you performing so poorly? Or why are your members of staff performing so below par? If you agree with me, you will acknowledge the fact that computers were manufactured by humans. And you will agree too that only a fraction of the human brain’s capacity was replicated into the computer.

What disqualifies a computer from getting hired?
  •  Computers can’t think! It is incontestable to say that computers don’t think, or better still can’t think! Why? Because they just cannot, as well as animals cannot.
  • Computers lack initiative. Computers function only with the input of a human mind. Computers cannot initiate processes on their own; they are created to process instructions that have been given to them. Same goes with many workplace people.
  •  Computers are not proactive. They stay “booted” idly waiting for the boss to dish the next instruction to them. If you are boss intending to shed your work load yet hire a computer, you have successfully added some bigger responsibility to the already burdensome work load you have.
  • Computers are not resourceful. You cannot successfully delegate if you always delegate to a computer because you will have to come back for the report before you can get it; and better be sure that the instructions you gave are accurate. They never take a second look at what lies before them neither do they seek better ways of executing their tasks. It’s not their fault; they just aren’t wired to do so.
If you upgrade a computer, you increase their efficiency not their effectiveness. They only get better at being ineffective not better. The only way to convert a computer is to execute a total overhaul. That is change the motherboard! You need to overhaul their prevailing mindset into what makes an effective worker. This is what we call Mental Revolution; and it comes best through Coaching.

Coaching takes time to work out and it can be quite challenging especially when the “computer” in question doesn’t see any reasons why he should change. And mind you, it costs quite some. If you think your computers are inseparable from you, employ coaching. But ensure that subsequent hiring efforts do not land you more computers.

My best advice to you is: don’t hire computers!

GLADIATORS IN THE WORKPLACE

If you have seen the movie, Gladiators, you will notice that every time Maximus stepped into the arena, it was another defining moment of his life. It wasn't exactly about the feat of retaining his title as the reigning champion as much as it was about surviving for yet another fight.

It is saddening that the equivalent holds true in most workplace today. It is not uncommon to find workers in an establishment engaged in stiff competition marked by rivalry and hatred for one another. This is the underlying mindset behind Office Politicking.

I found it necessary to address this menace today while I was reading Life@Work by John C. Maxwell, Thomas Addington and Stephen Graves.

The most subtle danger posed to workplace effectiveness is a negative mindset of the essence of being skilful. For the most part, many perceive skill as a weapon of destruction and dominance. It is employed to outsmart others and maintain the lead in the race for the title of "King of the Hill".

Let me say here: Work is not a competition! It is not a struggle for dominance. It is not a contest for survival and supremacy. It is not a tool for breasting the tape in the race up the corporate ladder. As long as it is viewed in that light, you will waste your energies doing the wrong thing; that way you can never be effective. Work is not a competition in search of the winner. It is not supposed to be a lack of competition because the competition should be against your previous best.

David Sarnoff quipped, "Competition brings out the best in products and the worst in people." And it is very true; especially when the competition is directed outward to others.

If you have listened to my audio training program on Exceptional Effectiveness, you will clearly understand this in the part where I addressed the Motive parameter under our Effectiveness Model.

You need to make a shift!

GLADIATOR        ----------------------->>>>>>>               BENEFACTOR

"Talent for talent's sake is a bauble and a show. Talent working with joy in the cause of universal  truth lifts the possessor to new power as a benefactor." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Your goal in the workplace among other critically important ones is to:

1. Excel not surpass
2. Perform not win
3. Be a marvel not a threat
4. Be a genius not a rival
5. Be a benefactor not an oppressor

I have said over the years that you should strive to be your best not the best. And I have not changed my mind about that. You ought to become the genius who with a minimum of technical equipment and a maximum of craftsmanship can make something of wonder out of very little. This is just a perfect way of rewriting my definition of Effectiveness: Ability to achieve more significant results win a shorter time

BECOMING MORE EFFECTIVE

Effectiveness is the ability to achieve more in the same or shorter time with
the same or less effort and resources.
~Adeleke David Adeosun (Mr Effectiveness)

Did you know before now that you can become more effective? And that you can do so daily? I bet that effectiveness has been as vague as it has been up till now. But my objective is to help you demystify and master it to your advantage. I'll like to share one principle with you in this post that can give you a rocket boost in your performance at work and in family life.

The interesting thing is that your lot in life is tied to your capacity rating, and you can't be better if you don't think you can be better. Hence, the first thing you ought to do is to discard the average mindset you have accepted as true and normal. Why do I say so? Because the best books are yet to be written, and the brightest of stars are yet to be born. So your future is practically greater than your present; if you will turn the present into the raw material for the future you've always dreamed of.

Life is in phases; time is in seasons. Uncertainty beclouds latter seasons when current seasons are not maximized. Using the clock as a guide, we have morning, afternoon, evening and night. Each of these represents a season in your life or in your business/ career. It could even represent a season in your family life or national development.

Here is the main line:

  • The most important thing to do in the morning season of any life, entity or nation is to plant seeds. This is the time to invest for the possibilities and potentials that abound in the future - the tomorrow you dream of.

  • The proper thing to do in the afternoon, also safe to call the mid-life season of maturity, is to stay focused on your course. Keep busy by minding your business; avoid distractions.

  • Evening time is for raking in profits. This is the season for harvesting from the seeds sown in the morning season. You need to be sensitive enough to know when to put the sickle to base of the planting and how not to destroy your investments by naivety and foolishness.

  • The dark-eyed days of life are the times when you must rest. Little can be done in this season, so your investments of your youthful years better be working real hard for "YOU Inc".

Plant your seed in the morning and keep busy all afternoon, for you don't
know if profit will come from one activity or another - or maybe both.
~ Ecclesiastical Teacher

If you play by this simple strategy for becoming more effective, you are sure to outsmart your personal hindrances to personal greatness.

TGIF! (3)

Thank God it’s Friday! (3)

Welcome to March!

How was today? I want to believe that Monday has become just like Friday now. Knowing all we have discussed so far, your life at work should make greater sense and have deeper meaning.

Last week we explored what work is not. We examined the seven myths about work and I believe they have removed the scales in your eyes and stirred a desire in you to find out what work really is. If you have been following this series, you will find out that these are foundational insights that many people are ignorant about; and if the foundation is weak, what can someone with sincere intentions and motives do? Absolutely nothing. Such a person is often sincerely ineffective; and maybe sincerely unproductive. The foundation is the beginning and determiner of the future. Whatever will be great tomorrow must be got right in the foundational stages.
Let us explore the seven truths about work; I am sure you will find this insightful.

Work is a mission. You are on a mission to fulfill a preset objective. Your mission is what you live for; and what you are ready to die for. What work is to your essence for living is what breath is to your being alive. Work is your opportunity to carry out your mission on earth. If you can’t die for your work you are probably not working. Anything that you can’t put your life on the line for cannot be certified as work.

Work is an instruction. You have an instruction from your creator to work. You inherited this instruction from the first man that ever lived. This instruction makes work an instinctive part of us. We are naturally wired to know that work is a part of our lives.

Work is a lifestyle. Your lifestyle is made up of those things you do without thinking of them or planning to do. They define others’ perception of you. Work defines the perception of others about us. The greatest men that are lived are primarily known for their works. They went about their work on a daily basis without thinking about whether it needed to be done or not. For the most successful people in every field of endeavour, work is a habit. It is a part and parcel of their lifestyle.

Work is a means of adding value to humanity. Your life summary will consist in what you have done for and given to humanity not how much you ate, drank, wore or amassed. Work gives us the opportunity to add value to others in little or big ways. Whatever your work looks like, in it is a purpose bigger than the tasks you do. A man who works as a vulcanizer for example, fulfils a greater purpose than his task of pumping air into flat tyres. He helps someone to be more efficient in his own work, saves the person a lot of time that he would have put into pumping the tyre with his mouth, helps the person stay unruffled in appearance and importantly saves one or more lives from accident. Your work carries within it greater meaning than can be found in the ordinary day-to-day tasks.

Work is an avenue for expressing your gifts, abilities and talents. Each one of us is loaded down with gifts and talents that can benefit others and make us fulfilled. It is an opportunity for you and I to express those abilities, gifts and talents we possess when we are at work. Look at it this way: You are a steward entrusted with gifts, abilities and talents that ought to be presented to the owner with profits upon His return. Every time you utilize those gifting in you, you refine them, thus causing an increase in value. If you appraise yourself now, how would you rate the value of your gifts, talents and abilities? How much is the world willing to pay to have you do what you know how to do best?

Work is a refinery. At work, we get refined from the raw that we are into a state that is purer, more valuable, and more appealing. Work will subject you to high levels of pressure and heat in a bid to purify you for greater levels of effectiveness and value. If you are the type that keeps complaining when you are mounted with pressure at work, then you are refusing the refining experience or work which happens in the workplace. What gets better or looks better remaining in the same spot? Absolutely nothing! Stagnancy is the profit of refusing refining.

Work is a school. At work, you engage tasks that show your capacity rating and mastery level. If you fail at a given task, your capacity rating for that is low and you have not yet mastered that task and its demands. That is what school does to us. School shows us what we previously were ignorant about and then examines our level of understanding and mastery of those insights. Our promotion is dependent on how we perform. Those who cheat their way through school are doing their selves great injustice because they will never be able to come to true and realistic appraisals of their capacity rating. Those who seek promotion with less than the required capacity rating are asking invariably to be broken down by responsibilities that are too much for them to handle. Ultimately, the organisation suffers, other team members are demoralized and they lose their footing and reputation, if they ever had any.

If you approach work exactly as it truly is, you will make the most of your life at work. Work is so much fun when you are on the right page. Work becomes more objective when you understand it properly; and that understanding helps you to be maximally effective as a superb worker.
